Carpathian National University named after Vasyl Stefanyk has become a member of the Baltic University Programme (BUP) — one of the largest and most respected university networks in Europe, bringing together more than 110 universities from 10 countries in the Baltic Sea region. The programme is coordinated by Uppsala University (Sweden), one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious universities, founded in 1477. Membership in BUP opens new opportunities for the university in international cooperation, academic mobility and joint research initiatives.
The Baltic University Programme was established in 1991 as an international academic initiative aimed at uniting universities in the region around a shared goal — developing education, science and society on the principles of sustainable development, democracy and responsible environmental stewardship. Notably, from its earliest days BUP was among the pioneers of international distance education: participating universities held joint lectures and academic discussions via satellite broadcasting before later moving to modern digital platforms for international collaboration.
Today, the Baltic University Programme is a powerful platform for cooperation among researchers, faculty, students and university leaders. Each year the network organises international conferences, summer schools, PhD training courses, young researcher forums, professional development programmes for faculty, student conferences, interdisciplinary seminars and numerous research projects. Network members gain access to a wide range of academic resources, international expert communities and partnership initiatives.
A distinctive feature of BUP is its interdisciplinary approach. The network’s activities cover ten thematic areas, including climate change, the circular economy, sustainable development of cities and communities, energy systems, food security, water resources, sustainable tourism, mobility, education for sustainable development, and democratic governance. This interdisciplinary focus brings together representatives of the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, economics and the humanities to jointly seek solutions to pressing global challenges.
